Beat the summer doldrums

Is there a better way to lift yourself out of the late August doldrums than enjoying the company of other glass artists?

August 29 Guild Picnic Independence, OR Mid-Willamette Valley folks, there’s still time to RSVP for this picnic at Maganda Glassworks. Everyone is welcome, so bring a friend who is interested in glass, even if they are not yet a member.

September 1 PNWGG Board Meeting on Zoom. Board meetings are open to the membership, and the agenda is posted online.

September 5-7 Art in the Pearl Demonstration Booth, Portland, OR. This is an exciting new opportunity for the Guild. We will have a demonstration booth at this very popular art event attended by more than 50,000 people over Labor Day weekend. Sign up today for a volunteer shift and showcase your glass skills. Even if you are unable to commit to a demo, mark your calendar to attend and say hello to fellow Guild members.

    Event Reminder

    There are quite a few glass events coming up this week, with opportunities to learn from PNW Glass Guild members, and shop for beautiful pieces made by member artists. More information for each event can be found on the Guild’s Events Calendar.

    Wednesday, November 12th at 12:30 pm is a Sherlocking/Scaffolding meeting at member Margie Reiff’s in Fairview, Oregon (East Portland). Bring a piece that didn’t work out the way you expected and learn from other members.

    Friday and Saturday, November 14-15th, you can shop and talk glass with member Pat Bielenberg at the Christmas Bazaar in Albany, OR.

    Saturday and Sunday, November 15-16th, you can make fun holiday fused glass ornaments in a class at member Mark Brody’s Portland studio. If you aren’t available this weekend, he is offering a Mosaic class the following weekend, November 21-22 as well.

    Sunday, November 16th at 3:30 pm we have an online Guild General Meeting in which you can learn about COE 82 fusing (i.e. fusing with window glass). Thanks to sponsor Glassy Cuts for sharing your expertise with the Guild!

    Planning waaay ahead, Linda Ethier is offering two classes in March, one on mold making and the other on pate de verre. She has generously offered PNW Glass Guild Members a 10% discount on the class fee. While it seems like a long time away, the class size is limited, so be sure to reach out to Linda for more information and to register soon!

    Event Reminder

    It’s hot, but the sun brings out the beautiful glass refractions we all love. Take some time to enjoy glass with others at one of the upcoming events around the region.

    August 15 Guild Picnic. Fairview, OR. RSVP today for this Guild picnic hosted by Margie Rieff at her lakefront home just outside Portland. Talk glass and share good food with other glass aficionados. For the brave, Margie has a couple of kayaks and a paddle board available. Members and non-members alike are welcome to attend the picnic.     August 15-16 Fresh Paint Festival. Everett, WA Visit member Mel Williams’ booth, and check out the many other artists showing their work in the Schack Art Center’s big summer art show in downtown Everett. This vibrant event features over 100 artist booths, live entertainment, interactive activities, glassblowing, and more.

    August 22-23 Silverton Arts Festival, Silverton, OR Guild member Kathy Kollenburn of Wildflower Fusing will be part of this juried event featuring 75 artists from around the Northwest. Find her at booth 20, under the trees in Coolidge-McClaine Park.

    Event Reminder

    From 10 am to 4 pm Members Ann Cavanaugh and Kevin Kanyo invite you to come stroll the beautiful gardens of Ann Cavanaugh to find that perfect piece from 10 PNW artists. The gardens will feature wood, ceramic, mixed media, metal, stone, and of course glass creations.

  • Glass Brunch Sun. April 6th in Seattle

    Event Reminder

    11 am the first Sunday of April: come to Karen Seymour’s house just west of the Seattle Zoo and talk glass with other artists. It usually runs to about 1:30. Bring a dish that will feed about 8 people. If you want something to drink other than water please bring that too.

    Show and tell: We love to see what you’ve been doing or hear what you are planning. Bring your glass questions too — there’s usually quite an accumulated level of experience at the table.

    RSVP to Karen so she has an idea of how many are coming — it’s really difficult to get out more chairs etc. after people start arriving.

  • Register NOW for Open Studios

    Event Reminder

    Glass Art Tour & Sale Sept. 14-15, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Portland/Vancouver: Register by Aug 15th (next Thurs.)

    Showing your work at a studio tour is very different from doing an art show. You don’t have to pack and unload everything in a few hours plus you often end up with a cleaner studio. The customers are genuinely interested in why and what you do. There are fewer of them but they BUY. It’s lots of fun. You’ll spend two days talking about glass and find yourself inspired and energized to make more art.

    This greater-Portland/Vancouver area studio tour is in its 9th year. Current PNW Glass Guild members who have their studio or home in these five counties:  Columbia, Multnomah, Washington, Clackamas (Oregon) or Clark (Washington State) are encouraged to register to be on the tour. Some already registered studios have space for guests (you must be a current PNW Glass Guild member to participate). More guest artists generally means more customers stop by your location.
