  • Featured Artist: LuDell Parrett, Salem OR

    I began my love of, and obsession for, glass in the late 1970s while taking stained glass and advanced stained glass in college as I earned my fine art degree. I then went on to higher education and became an Occupational Therapist and practiced for 36 years.

    I did not engage in glass art again until 8 years ago; when as a family, we took a one-evening fused glass class and created very simple projects. This rekindled my desire to create with the amazing medium that is glass. Since that time, I have procured a medium, a large and a vitrigraph kiln and happily utilize them consistently.

    I began doing Glass on Glass (GOG) Mosaics independently, utilizing some fused elements in my mosaics. I fell in love with this form of capturing the permanence and yet fragility of glass art. The play of light and color is the stuff of magic. I was blessed to happen upon the amazing resources of Marvelous Mosaic Fine Art and Kory Dollar of Deer Island, Oregon. I took a weekend workshop that upped my skills beyond my imagining! I have taken many more courses from Kory Dollar and continue to learn from her.

    I assisted Kory Dollar with teaching classes in Las Vegas this April at the Glass and Bead Craft Expo. While at the GBCE event I entered one of my GOG mosaics, “In the Cool of the Evening” in the competition and I won First Place for Judge’s Choice and People’s Choice in the amateur category. I am grateful for all I have learned from Kory Dollar, and if you are wanting to expand your glass skills – I encourage you to experience a retreat at Marvelous Mosaic Fine Art.

    A couple of years ago I retired from medical and corporate work and am now a very happy full-time Glass Artisan. I create fused glass, vitrigraph and Glass on Glass art, and now do commissioned pieces. I find much pleasure in creating inclusions from pulling vitrigraph, then cutting and re-fusing it again to make flat-backed pieces to use in mosaics. I also am teaching small groups of 6 or less at my home studio in the beautiful woods outside of Salem, Oregon. My studio name is “The Welcoming Woods”. You can find me on Facebook as The Welcoming Woods, and Instagram @thewelcomingwoods or in the Members’ gallery.

  • Featured Artist: Suzanne Tyler, Beaverton OR

    My relationship with glass began in 1988 when I was working in downtown Portland, just a few blocks from Cline Glass. I kept visiting the store on my lunch breaks to look at the glass, and finally decided one day to sign up for a stained glass class. I was hooked! What started as a simple creative outlet quickly became a lifelong passion, and far surpasses the excitement I have for my other hobbies of quilting, painting, soap making, and attempting to grow citrus trees.

    I am continuously fascinated by the way glass can be layered, shaped, and transformed by heat, and by the endless possibilities for color and texture. Once I began working with fused glass, I knew I had found my artistic home.

    Over the years, I have studied with many talented artists, including Ann Cavanaugh locally, and have taken classes from numerous artists at the Las Vegas Bead and Glass Craft Exposition for the past two years. I continue to experiment and learn. One of the things I love most about glass is that there is always something new to discover when I open my kiln after a firing – not always what I expect, but always exciting! The medium is constantly evolving, and so am I.

    My work is colorful, eclectic, and inspired by the beauty and wonder I see in the world around me. I enjoy creating pieces that bring joy, spark curiosity, and invite people to pause and look a little closer. Light plays an important role in nearly everything I make. Whether it’s a wall piece, a garden lantern, or an outdoor sculpture, I love watching how changing light transforms glass throughout the day, giving each piece a life of its own.

    Lately I have been experimenting with freestanding pieces and creating stable and attractive bases for my work (not always an easy feat!) I’m also trying to better document my firings and improve my firing schedules to move toward successful pieces on the first try!

    I’ve been an active member of the Pacific Northwest Glass Guild for about seven years and have greatly enjoyed being part of a community that is passionate about sharing knowledge, encouraging artistic growth, and promoting the art of glass.

    After more than 37 years working with glass, I still feel the same excitement I felt when I completed my very first project, which was a small lead came stained glass iris piece. Every new piece is an opportunity to learn, create, and explore, and that sense of discovery continues to inspire me every day.

    This year, I am excited to once again participate in the Portland Area Open Studios Tour September 19-20. I look forward to welcoming visitors into my studio, sharing my creative process, talking about fused glass, and connecting with fellow art lovers. One of the best parts of Open Studios is the opportunity to meet people, answer questions, and help others discover the remarkable variety and beauty of glass art. I will also be participating in the new Mid-Willamette Valley Glass Art Show and Sale August 1st. On-line you can find my work in the Members’ Gallery and on Etsy

    Hello PNWGG Members!

    I hope you are all enjoying the transition into these beautiful, bright summer months! It has been an incredibly busy and rewarding year so far. I want to extend my deepest gratitude to everyone who poured their time, energy, and passion into our major spring initiatives. These collaborative efforts are what keep our glass community so vibrant.

    As we move into summer, our focus turns toward fellowship, informal learning, and planning for the future of the Guild. We have some wonderful summer events lined up, and I highly encourage you to come out, connect with fellow glass artists, and share in the fun!

    Upcoming Summer Events

    • Summer Picnics: We have three fantastic Guild-sponsored picnics scheduled across our region. Mark your calendars, bring a dish, and join us for great food and conversation:
      • July 19: Hosted at the home of Karen Seymour in Seattle, WA (by the Seattle zoo).
      • August 15: Hosted at the home of Margie Rieff in Fairview, OR (NE of Portland).
      • August 29: Hosted at Maganda Glassworks in Independence, OR (Near Salem).
    • Portland Saturday Market ‘Crafternoon’(July 25): We are excited to step into a wonderful public outreach opportunity at the Portland Saturday Market on the waterfront! The market is hosting a “Crafternoon” event where the Guild will introduce the fun of glass fusing to the general public. It’s a spectacular avenue to promote the Guild, spark interest in art glass, and share contact information for members who teach classes. We are scheduled for July 25th. Contact  Pam Archuleta or Barb Kienle  for more information.
    • Mid-Willamette Valley Glass Art Show and Sale (August 1): For the first time, our Mid-Valley region will host a special one-day glass show on Saturday, August 1, 2026, organized by Maganda Glassworks in Independence, OR. Maganda Glassworks will be hosting artists setting up 10×10 canopies in their outdoor area. Registration has been extended to July 17th, so please visit the website to submit your registration form.

    Looking to 2027: Board & Team Openings

    A healthy organization thrives on fresh perspectives and shared leadership. We will have vital Board Officer and Team Leader positions open for 2027. Serving on the board or heading a team is a rewarding way to give back to your community, shape the educational direction of the Guild, and form deep relationships with a diverse network of artists.     Summer is the perfect time to connect with other glass artists at one of the Guild’s regional picnics. Enjoy good food, sunshine (hopefully), and the chance to meet and talk glass with others who share your passion. Members and non-members alike are welcome to attend any or all of them! Please let the organizers know if you are coming, so they can be sure to have enough chairs available for everyone.

  • Studio Tours Coming Soon

    Mark your calendars for several upcoming Studio Tours!

    For participating artists, these events provide a meaningful platform to share both finished work and process. It is an opportunity to connect directly with collectors, educate the public about glass techniques, and offer insight into the time, skill, and intention behind each piece. Studios become spaces for conversation, discovery, and appreciation of light, color, and form in glass. Whether your work is sculptural, functional, or wall-based, the tour highlights the unique ways glass interacts with light and space, creating an immersive experience for visitors and artists alike. Artists are encouraged to register early, as participation is limited.

    August 1: New Mid-Willamette Valley Glass Art Show, Independence, OR (near Salem)

    Sponsor Maganda Glassworks is opening their outdoor area to glass artists in the mid-Willamette Valley for this first-annual show and sale. Tour multiple glass artists work all in a single location, learn about their inspirations and techniques, and leave with some beautiful glass art for yourself or a gift. Registration has been extended to July 17th (there are already 8 artists registered but there’s space for a few more)

    If you live in the area please help them get the word out by printing and hanging the poster in your neighborhood coffee shop, office break room etc.

    September 19-20: PNW Glass Guild’s Open Studios Tour, Portland, OR
    This annual tour invites the public into working glass studios across the Portland area, offering a rare opportunity to experience the full range of glass making—from fused glass and stained glass to kiln-formed work, torchwork, and experimental techniques. Visitors gain a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process, seeing how raw materials are transformed into luminous, one-of-a-kind works of art, many of which are for sale. The map, artist info and other details for planning your visit will be on the event listing by September.

    Registration closes July 31. Some artists have room for guests. Please contact Suzanne Tyler for more information.

    October 17-18 Glass and Decor Studio Tour, Seattle, WA
    Come talk with many of the Seattle area PNW Glass Guild members at 5 north Seattle studios. Each studio has multiple guest artists in glass and a variety of other media. Combine this with your visit to other glass events as part of Refract, the Seattle area’s annual 4-day celebration of glass.

  • Guild News

    Shape the Future of Our Guild: 2027 Leadership Openings

    As a member-driven nonprofit, the Pacific Northwest Glass Guild thrives on the diverse talents and volunteer spirit of our community. To ensure we keep growing, we are officially opening the search for our 2027 leadership term.

    Per our bylaws, every Board Officer position is open for election annually, and any member in good standing is welcome to run. Thanks to our incredible community, we already have enthusiastic candidates for President, Secretary, Treasurer, and two Vice President co-chairs but feel free to run yourself for any of these positions.

    1. Board Officer Positions (1-Year Commitment, 2 years for Treasurer)

    • President: Provides general oversight, chairs monthly Zoom board meetings, updates policies, and ensures financial security. (Outgoing President transitions to Past President for support).
    • Vice President (currently we have 2 co-VPs): Steps in for the President when needed, recruits guest speakers, and hosts our eight online monthly General Meetings via Zoom.
    • Secretary: Manages corporate record keeping by attending board meetings, taking minutes, and uploading them to the Guild website. (~10–15 hours quarterly).
    • Treasurer: Oversees the Guild’s financial accounts, manages the budget, handles incoming and outgoing payments, and provides regular financial reports to the Board.

    2. Team Volunteer Opportunities

    We have wonderful leaders lined up for almost all teams, but we urgently need a Website Team Leader to manage our WordPress site and decide when we can fix things ourselves and when to call in the retained professionals

    Additionally, every team needs enthusiastic hands-on volunteers to share the workload. If you want to get involved without the pressure of a chair position, joining a team in a supporting position is the perfect way to start:

    • Communications Team : Manages digital communications sent out to the Guild membership and the public.
    Looking for • a Mailchimp data manager who can clean out the bad addresses and do backups of our 2 audiences • a Publicity Graphics Designer who can create PDFs for web and print-ready pieces for Guild events.

    • Education Team: Coordinates guest instructors, workshops, “Play Days,” and public outreach like our Saturday Market “Crafternoon.”

    • Membership Team: Processes new memberships, welcomes newcomers, and assists at public events.
    Looking for • volunteers to hand out Guild information at events and glass related businesses in their area

    • Newsletter Team: Creates these bi-monthly issues to tie together the various glass events and people throughout the Pacific NW. 
    Looking for • a Featured Artist Editor (convince 2 members per issue to send you things) • a Recent Events editor (willing to learn photo cropping and resizing) • a proofing volunteer or two (get the news first!).

    • Social Media Team: Creates creative content for social media accounts.

    • Sponsorship Team: Cultivates partnerships with commercial sponsors and coordinates our sponsorship fairs.

    • Website Team: Keeps our website running smoothly and securely, trains and assists other teams in adding what they need to the website. 
    Looking for: • a Team Lead • a Web-help document creator/editor • a Guild Events coordinator who helps individual Guild event organizers get their registration and publicity going on the website • a Website Trainer (Do you like to teach? We can teach you enough WordPress so that you can teach other volunteers how to add their content)

  • General Meetings on Zoom

    The May 17th General Meeting featured member Milo Snyder who does sculptural glass lighting. He walked through his process from digital design and 3D printing to mold making and kiln casting, cold-working, and installation, as well as, spoke about the realities of building a practice – from technical challenges, to business considerations.     July 18-19, as part of the American Craft Council Open Studio event, Milo Snyder showing his studio in Seattle about 10 blocks from the Seattle Guild picnic July 19 so it will be easy to drop in and see his impressive studio and work on your way home.

    The June 28th General Meeting featured Portland area artist Jason Payton, the maker who can help you create kiln‑carved magic! Jason talked about how artists can use his collection of laser‑cut fiber paper designs, or let him transform your own sketches into a one‑of‑a‑kind masterpiece. Jason also crafts stunning custom wood frames to showcase your work, and designs lighting that will make your glass glow as if it has a life of its own.     2nd Annual Community Art Show at Mandarin Stained Glass in Lakewood, WA

    Sponsor Mandarin Stained Glass, LLC in Lakewood, WA, near Tacoma, hosted 20 vendors at their 2nd annual art show at the end of June. Attendance was reported at 300 to 400 (photos taken at about 10 am).

  • Fond Farewells

    The Guild has learned that sadly, two much-beloved Washington glass businesses are closing soon.

    • Athena Hornsby, Guild member and owner of sponsor Northwest Garden Bling, is retiring. She is liquidating her shop in Concrete WA, by the end of the year. Glass artists and aficionados in Northwest Washington will deeply miss her classes, shop, and joyful encouragement of creativity through glass. We wish Athena the best in her retirement!
    • Glass artist Kevin Creekmore, owner of Moltenworks Glass in Woodinville, WA, has announced that the business is closing as of July 24th. Kevin and his crew introduced hundreds of people in the central Puget Sound area to fused glass through classes and open studio access over the past 11 years. We wish him well in his next endeavor.

    NW Washington glass artists: Please reach out to your fellow artists who were using these resources and invite them to Play Days etc.. If you are willing to rent time in your kiln you might register with Sponsor Bullseye’s Kilnspace so those artists still have a way to fuse if they don’t have a kiln. Members can log in to see and add to the resources list to help others find helpful glass related things.

    The story of this iconic glass treasure spans over half of a century, a longevity rarely found in glass galleries or shops today. It began as Mandarin Gallery, founded by Florence Welborn in 1974, who lived life with passion; as an artist, educator, entrepreneur, traveler, mentor and mother. Two years ago, after Florence passed away, her daughter, Caroline Lahman and her husband, Michael stepped in to take over and continue the legacy her beloved mother had spent a lifetime building as a champion of stained glass and restoration.

    Caroline changed the gallery name to “Mandarin Stained Glass LLC” to shine a light on stained glass which remains their primary focus. They also added and work with many other glass forming methods and techniques, providing products to support local artists and hobbyists and classes that range from stained glass to leading, copper foil, fusing/slumping, and mosaics.

    They have a wide selection of glass books

    Florence successfully ran the business for over 50 years, so Caroline grew up learning how to do stained glass and restoration with her mother as an expert teacher. Later, Caroline spent 30 years in the military with 15 years overseas in Europe. She says, “When I invited my mom and dad to come to Italy, that’s when it kind of exploded. She fell in love with Italy and all the glass that was there: Murano and Rubino with the mosaics which is how they got into doing mosaics. Caroline says, “We still have several of Florences’ mosaics and some of mine on the walls.” Those pieces are not for sale.

    “We have classrooms upstairs and downstairs with multiple kilns.” Michael explains, “We can accommodate as many as 20 students downstairs and 6-8 upstairs.” They plan to add vitrigraph classes and torchwork once the equipment is set up and they obtain the torches. They sell COE 90, 96, 104 murrine for people who do torchwork. “We have all these wonderful artists who teach these classes along with the traditional painting on glass which is taught by Philippe Tillay, our resident Victorian painter on glass who is actually from France where Reusche enamels originated,” Caroline adds. Their location and size make it easy for them to support artists and their local community by offering classes and sponsoring Art Fairs (see photos of the recent one in the article below).
